SlickUpload has a long history in the realm of upload components, being one of the first ASP.NET upload components released back in 2003/2004, with continuous development and improvement over the past eight years. Today, I am excited to announce that SlickUpload has been acquired by Axosoft!

SlickUpload is used by Axosoft's Transfer Big Files site to service more than a terabyte of uploads per day. I will be coming on board at Axosoft to work on SlickUpload and Transfer Big Files, and we'll be working together to make SlickUpload even more reliable and performant.

As part of this acquisition, we're making two licensing changes to simplify the structure:

  • First up is the new SlickUpload Community Edition. Community Edition is 100% free for personal use, non-profit organizations, open source projects, and educational institutions.
  • Secondly, we're collapsing all other licenses into one: the SlickUpload Redistributable License. This will be reduced in price to $499 from $599, and allows you to run a single application on unlimited servers and/or redistribute SlickUpload with one application.

After this change, the three editions of SlickUpload will be:

  • SlickUpload Community Edition (Free!) - Restricted to personal use, non profit organizations, open source projects, and educational institutions. Will include "Powered By SlickUpload Community Edition" branding with link to krystalware.com.
  • SlickUpload Redistributable License ($499) - Use on an unlimited number of servers for a single application. You can also redistribute the product with your own commercial application without any royalties. All branding is removed from this version.
  • SlickUpload Source Code License ($2,499) - For those who need the additional peace of mind of holding the source code. This license allows for modification of source code for use on an unlimited number of servers for a single application or for redistribution with your own applications.

The $149 single server license will remain available until 30 November 2011.

Yes, you'll have free access to upgrade to minor version releases, i.e. 6.*. Once we release version 7, you'd need to purchase an upgrade at that point

If you want to upgrade to the new Redistributable license, you can do that for the difference in price between the two ($350).

Since I already have version 6 since July in 2011, will I be able to upgrade to the distributed license in July of 2012 (or just before my current license expires) at the $350.00 price or is that price only good for a limited time?

Secondly, why did you have to get rid of the $149 (singel server) version? I'm a small operation - just a side business - and that $499 price may entice me to just go back to using my own upload tool which was far less functional than yours. I could afford the $149, but much more than that and I simply have to depend on my home-grown (less capable) variety. Maybe I'm one of a kind, but just in case I'm not, I thought I'd at least let you know how this will affect me.

Thanks for a great product - I hope I can afford to continue using it.

Regards,
Bob

Your version 6 single server license will be good for all releases of version 6. You won't need to upgrade to continue getting updates until we release version 7.

If you do want to upgrade to the redistributable license, then yes, you can upgrade to any license from any license for the difference between the two prices at any time. Currently, the redistributable is $499, so the upgrade would be $499 - $149 = $350.

The new pricing structure is an effort to simplify, as well as making SlickUpload available for free for all non-commercial efforts. The new price/license structure isn't set in stone -- we'll be evaluating our customers needs as time goes along and adjusting accordingly.

Such a shame that the "simplified" pricing is so high. We were planning on using this for a couple of projects after being impressed by a demo, but there's no way our customers will eat the $499 instead of the $149 which would have given them everything they needed (no need for more than one server for a small online system).

We shall be looking elsewhere.

Amazing product, but $499 for is too expensive for a small project.
